Manchester City vs. Wigan: Final report 1-0 as City sputter to gain...

Carlos Tevez spared City's blushes as the defending champions laboured to a detailed gain against Wigan at the Etihad. Manchester City and Wigan Athletic can meet in the FA Cup final the following month, but Wednesday saw a League dress rehearsal which the hosts quite obviously didn't give two figs about. The Latics, meanwhile, are fighting against relegation again gave the match every thing they had, which resulted in the strange spectacle of the defending champions wanting second-best at home for some of the match. After all, they still won, because that's what are the results with Manchester City, but they certainly did not look good along the way. Wigan were humming throughout and it took the crossbar and some good saves from Joe Hart to help keep them off the scoresheet. The hosts, meanwhile, seemed ridiculously stodgy in the years ahead, failing if they finally bothered fighting with any certainty, to severely trouble Joel Robles until the final ten minutes of the match. It obviously took a from Paul Scharner to raise City from their stupor. The Wigan man rattled Hart's crossbar with a thumping header and then begin to see the linesman's flag rule out his attempt anyway. It was not the visitors' first near-miss: Franco di Santo and Arouna Kone may possibly both are finding themselves on the scoresheet simply to be refused by Hart, but this time around Carlos Tevez answered in destructive fashion. Scampering past both Scharner and James McArthur, the striker worked herself some room in the box, and once it'd opened up Tevez pulled off a powerful near-post drive, whipping Joel and breaking the deadlock. It is a disappointing result for Wigan, who can obviously have done with the position while they look to fight their way out of the relegation struggle that City were offering.
