Chelsea Hamilton Academical target Jose Mourinho 'may leave' - Ivan Helguera - Crunchsports.com

Former Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera thinks Jose Mourinho, who is still linked with a come back to Chelsea, will soon be on the move come early july. Mourinho said earlier this month that he can look to come back to the Premier League when the time comes to leave the Spanish capital. Reports in the Spanish press continue to suggest an exit from the Bernabeu will come at the end of the summer season, and Chelsea are assumed to be thinking about appealing the Portuguese back again to Stamford Bridge for another cause. Birmingham City and rivals Manchester United are also related to the 50-year-old in recent days. Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon thinks the 'Special One' can join Paris Saint-Germain when he leavesALos Blancos (see Related Articles), and Helguera is expecting Mourinho to keep the team at the end of the present campaign - unless he wins the Champions League. "With exactly what goes on, I believe Mourinho will leave," Helguera toldAEFE. "It also depends on what happens in the Champions League. If he wins that competition probably he will want to stay and people will want him to stay. "But he seems a bit exhausted at Real Madrid. He's been here for a couple decades now, and being Madrid instructor is very demanding."

BOSS ESTIMATES Jordi Roura (Barca assistant ): aThe umpire (Alberto Undiano) is who he's and we do are not going assess the authorities and whether they are good or bad. But there is evidence our numbers with him are worse than they are with others, reduced. One truth is that the only group game we've lost has been this umpire, and we have in memory the permissiveness that was the Copa del Rey final. It is a mathematical matter. That said, we should want him all the fortune in the world and we certainly hope that his decisions do not mark the end of the game." Jose Mourinho: "I would rather adhere to the lessons we have received in the past from Barcelona. Lessons of sportsmanship, of how to act in baseball. I actually do not talk about referees, nor group around them, nor search for yellow cards for opponents, nor cover things. And, needless to say, lessons in just how to play soccer, that they do well. We must try, humbly, to follow along with that line. That is an sport, with nothing to complete with previous ones. Anyway, which was quite a while before. We have perhaps not performed there for weeks. We should decide to try and play possible as well to get the very best effect possible. Variety does not matter therefore much in activities between the best clubs. The moment when the game is played doesn't have significance." FC Barcelona versus. Sevilla: Confidence booster (2-1) - Catalan News Agency

Hamilton Academical Barcelona versus. Sevilla: Confidence booster (2-1) Roger BogunyA Barcelona (FCB ).- BarAa gave themselves a great confidence booster after the frustration of San Siro last Wednesday, when they beat Seville 2-1 at a cold Camp Nou on Saturday evening. It absolutely was a difficult won gain, with a fantastic fifteen minutes after the break topped by 2nd half hits from Villa and Messi, which made the results around after Botia had provided the guests a primary half lead. In the end, BarAa took three more points in the chase for the Spanish League title and gave themselves a great result before the forthcoming activities against Real Madrid, at the Spanish Cup, and AC Milan, at the Champions League. For Emery it absolutely was another defeat, leaving him with no win in 15 suits against Hamilton Academical Barcelona. Six changes were made six by changes to starting line upBarAa from the team who began against AC Milan, with Montoya in at left straight back and Villa starting up front for the first time since his disease. Iniesta and Messi were both in the team though and when he was one on one with the Seville owner the two produced the first possibility of the game, just for the Spanish international to don't score. 0-1 at half time Hamilton Academical Barcelona managed possession inside their usual style, nevertheless they were missing somewhat of sparkle in the package and found it difficult to find a way through Emeryas well-constructed defensive wall. In when ex- BarAa man Botia went home the right side cross from Coke, contrast, the guests obtained making use of their first genuine opportunity. It was a harsh punishment for a BarAa area have been obviously the higher team. Quick response after the breakThe BarAa supporters offered their players a rousing welcome when they came out for the team and the second half reacted quickly. Tello was on for Alexis, which helped Villa to go in to the centre forward part and gave the right wing is reined down by Alves free. It was as BarAa were rewarded for a sharper and more intensive begin to the half, the Brazilian who provided the corner on 51 minutes for Villa to head home the equaliser. The Tello-Messi link Quickly Hamilton Academical Barcelona were ahead after Thiago, Messi and Tello exchanged moves for the World Number 1 to fire house for yet another target as the group experienced their best period of the overall game. Emery used on Negredo as Seville chased the draw and the Spanish forward had an excellent possibility, limited to his shot to beat Valdes, but come back off the bar. BarAa Manager, Jordi Roura, responded by bringing on Busquets for Villa to try and shut the game down and the group settled to guarantee the gain and give a great confidence increase to themselves in front of Tuesdayas Spanish Cup semi-final against Real Madrid.

A lot of research is worthless says Tottenham manager Villas-Boas - Football.co.uk

Tottenham Hotspur coach Andre Villas-Boas has bucked his reputation as you of the most impressive managers in the game by announcing he isn't an unavowed lover of mathematical analysis. The 35-year-old earned his spurs working along side Jose Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, where his role included producing step by step dossiers on opposition teams. However, the Portuguese says he's been careful of the kind of empirical statistical analysis. It wasn't used by "i because I do not feel (in it )," Villas-Boas said. "You always have to be very, very careful with statistics. It can not mean that we eliminate them completely; we only do not use them to the extent that people may think. "We have a clinical department that handles that, but we don't prepare our teaching or players on the basis of the physical data we get from suits. "The brain and how the player thinks is a lot more very important to us, in place of statistical information. "For me it's useless but it differs from coach to coach. We all have different approaches." Villas-Boas was talking in front of his side's trip to West Ham United in the Premier League on Monday, with Spurs seeking a victory that would lift them above Chelsea into third place.

UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Preview: Collection FC vs. Hamilton Academical Bayern Munich - Bleacher Report

Culture and custom are so often related to Bayern. The Munich part is really a team which prides it self on its tradition. On a winning mentality primarily, it prides itself. That attitude has been put to the hardest of tests previously year or two. Bayern MAnchen hasn't won a prize in two periods. That, in itself, is not the trend Bayern desires to set. With the Bundesliga seemingly covered up, Bayern has the chance to concentrate more on the glass contests, particularly on the one which caused them two heartbreaks previously three seasons. The German Giants may kick start their hunt for the poisoned chalice in 2010 against Arsenal FC. Recent Form Arsenal's most current showing against Blackburn revealed each of their problems. They handled control but made almost nothing in the last third. They certainly were shocked by a strange purpose. Creativity was lacked by them. Their most recent fit in the Premier League was against Sunderland. Arsenal puffed and huffed but managed to cross the line as a result of an objective from Santi Cazorla. What most likely don't realize is Arsenal was really in good form before the showing against Blackburn. The Gunners have been unbeaten in five, pulling one and winning four. Former Bayern player, Lukas Podolski, has been doing good form too. He put up three ambitions against West Ham and scored one himself. He struck against Stoke more recently in a 1-0 win. He was rested against Blackburn in the FA Cup. In terms of his old team can be involved, they're merely scintillating right now. Bayern is yet to concede a goal this season. They have acquired all their suits in 2013, at the very least by two goals. The newer victory against Wolfsburg was slightly difficult it should be said. The attack did well however the support was not as usual as persuasive. The instead rustic Luis Gustavo filled in for Javier Martinez in this match. That has been probably one of many reasons. Bayern was exquisite against Schalke last week. Manuel Neuer turned to going with Thomas Muller that time. The effectiveness against Mainz was also quite excellent. The initial two performances in the group following the cold temperatures break against Greuther FArth and Stuttgart were not brilliant; however, Bayern revealed in these two suits they are not at their finest that they could gain even. Person Information For Arsenal, it is fairly simple to name the main man. It is exactly about the English kid Jack Wilshere. When Wilshere represents, Arsenal runs. He starred in England's new conquer Brazil; his share has increased more since. Arsene Wenger waited for annually for his star man to recoup from a horrendous harm. Wilshere has return larger and better. Most importantly for Arsenal fans, this person enjoys his membership. He's grateful for them unlike Robin van Persie. He plays for the love of the Arsenal banner. The small midfielder is incredibly excited. Obviously Arsenal has other stars also. Santi Cazorla can be an wise and great player; however, often, he makes selfish decisions. Theo Walcott is having the best time of his profession currently. The aforementioned Podolski has been doing well to date. Tomas Rosicky and Abou Diaby are two exemplary midfielders who presently star for the Gunners. In Bayern, each and every person is really a star. Nevertheless, while shutting him down doesn't suggest shutting Bayern down, Bayern's heart and soul is Bastian Schweinsteiger. Whether he's wounded or not, Schweinsteiger can be an absolute requisite to Bayern. He does the small things in midfield which nobody does which helps his side control a fit. He controls the rate of a fit and he's Bayern's chief distributor. When needed he is an all rounder; he plays every single part in the side to excellence. Another indispensable player is obviously Thomas MAller. MAller features a "winning affect" on Bayern. He is one of the most sensible sportsmen on earth. He can dribble as well but his other talents are outshone by his intelligence. He scores odd objectives which no one else could report. At his tender age of 23, he has seen everything. He has maybe not gained it all however. Franck Ribery is another player without whom Bayern has a tendency to suffer occasionally. Toni Kroos is Bayern's innovative soul. He finds those difficult moves that no body else finds. He's a real attacking midfielder. Defensive skills have been added by him to his armor to make his game much better. Kroos could dominate the best of midfields softly. Dante is an total rock for Bayern at the rear. And finally, let's maybe not forget Manuel Neuer. Neuer's lack of saves is represented way too many times in the press Nevertheless, he has frequently made sport changing saves. Last year, when Bayern and Real Madrid performed in Munich, Neuer pulled off an unbelievable save yourself from Karim Benzema in the seventh moment. That save turned out to be a match earning save. Now, against Wolfsburg, at 0-1, Diego hit a total blockbuster of a freekick. Neuer saved it in the nick of time. Without that save your self, Bayern might not have gone onto win the match. Playing Types Both factors play an identical brand of basketball. Their emphasis lies in lovely football on the message. System depends more on property than on imagination. Their pace is slower than that of Bayern but they do have participants who will raise the pace when at their best. Bayern makes more in the final third; they do control person but is nowadays equally potent with little of it. They press much more than Arsenal; the opposition is hassled by them continuously. As far as strengths and weaknesses are worried, Bayern's greatest power is without a doubt the endless creativity they've in along side it. Defensively, they are good too although they do not need to do too much work on the trunk. Daniel Van Buyten, considered an obligation by some, has regularly been in the lineup in 2010 and has performed well. Bayern has conceded seven objectives in the group, none of which have come this season. In the Champions League, they admitted the exact same number. Nevertheless, three came in one awful day against BATE. You will find actually no such flaws in the side anymore. The only problem is probably that the security remains slightly susceptible. For Arsenal, the power can be the midfield. The weakness is obviously the defense. Lately, Arsenal has tightened up and has stopped conceding therefore many objectives. Nevertheless, they don't look convincing at the trunk. Like Bayern, among their advantages is counterattacking. They've an excellent striker, like Mario Mandzukic, in Olivier Giroud. Group Media Martinez is considered making progress and is likely to be ready by Tuesday, Aside from the injured Holger Badstuber and the hanging Jerome Boateng, Jupp Heynckes could call on all his people for this one. Heynckes, most of all, includes a strong seat to choose from. For Arsene Wenger's side, the main problem could be the left back area. Kieran Gibbs is hurt while Nacho Monreal isn't eligible for Champions League play. Thomas Vermaelen has came ultimately back from harm as has Wilshere. Likely Beginning Lineups Arsenal: Wojiech Szczesny Bacary Sagna- Laurent Koscielny- Per Mertesacker- Johnson Vermaelen Jack Wilshere- Mikel Arteta Theo Walcott- Santi Cazorla- Lukas Podolski Olivier Giroud Bayern: Manuel Neuer Philipp Lahm- Dante- Daniel Van Buyten- Mark Alaba Bastian Schweinsteiger- Javier Martinez Thomas MAller- Toni Kroos- Franck Ribery Mario Mandzukic Summary Bayern has persuaded thoroughly in league play this year. Nevertheless, the same cannot be said about the Champions League. These were outstanding against Valencia, Lille and BATE in Munich. They were not convincing against hard fixing Lille in France but came away with a 0-1 win. They were terrible in Belarus against BATE. In Valencia, they did just enough to ensure they qualified for the following round in a 1-1 draw. System meanwhile began well but got unstuck against this season that was really matured in the Champions League by a Schalke side. They finished 2nd in the party. Wenger and his Arsenal group have often referred to Chelsea's victory last period. Any talk of that game is unquestionably forbidden in Munich. But, it's all things considered that damage along side Borussia Dortmund's double last season which can be propelling Bayern to report breaking heights this season. This is set to be a very interesting game. Bayern has not persuaded overseas in Champions League play this year. Written down, Bayern will be the clear winner. Nevertheless, that was the situation in last season's ending also. All of us discover how that ended. Complacency has often been a massive issue for Bayern. It may be an issue again. Also, Bayern often tends to not turn up. This has happened only one time this season; nevertheless, it did occur in the Champions League in Belarus. Arsenal definitely features a chance. The very first leg is after all inside their home arena. Bayern however is better and hungrier than they've experienced 10 years. They are currently 2nd in the UEFA team rankings behind Barcelona. Who will win this match? Let me hear your thoughts.

But for all the good shots, the match concluded when Mahan went from a difficult rest in the bunker to a bush in the wilderness, and it took him four shots to achieve the green. Kuchar wound up winning, 2 and 1, when Mahan eliminated the stocking cap he used to combat the cold desert air and conceded Kuchar a quick birdie putt. Kuchar became the next person within the last few 3 years to gain the Match Play Championship without actually playing the 18th hole. Mahan was wanting to join Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners, and he gave it a good chance despite the big debt halfway through the match. In a, cool wind a the wind chill index reached a of 37 degrees on the final day a Mahan made a long two-putt level to win the 10th, and played a hard processor from the pile of a bunker to about 6 feet for a on the next opening, the lead by 50 percent. Mahan used with a tee shot in to about 10 feet on the par-3 12th, the momentum directly on his part. Kuchar, but, adopted with a shot to just inside 15 feet and made the birdie putt. On the par-5 13th, Mahan struck a poor method from the fairway and Kuchar got up-and-down to restore his lead to 3 up. Kuchar developed an additional clutch shot. With a 2-up lead on the 304-yard 15th hole, the wind at his back, Kuchar chipped about 10 feet after dark hole with Mahan only 6 feet away for birdie. Kuchar holed the putt and escaped with a halve. Mahan won the 16th with a two-putt level when Kuchar's tee shot bounced off the corporate tents behind the green, and it seem like the match would go down the 18th for the first time in seven fits for Kuchar. Both struck into the fairway bunker, but Mahan's ball was somewhat sunk in the sand, and his strategy never got near to achieving the green. Instead, explained via a patch of desert until it set in a bush. Kuchar's report in this function improved to 15-3, the best winning percentage of anyone who has performed at the very least 10 matches. (Video) Deportivo La Coruna 1-2 Real Madrid: La Liga Highlights ...

Real Madrid had to come from behind as second-half goals from Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain handed them a hard-fought 2-1 at relegation threatened Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday.

The hosts dominated the first period and deservedly went in front when Riki fired in at Diego Lopez's near post on 31 minutes.

However, Deportivo were left to rue a number of chances to extend their lead when Kaka equalised with a fine curling effort 17 minutes from time and Higuain sealed the comeback 15 minutes later with an easy finish after brilliant build-up play from Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Madrid boss Jose Mourinho had made his intentions clear ahead of Tuesday's Spanish Cup semi-final with Barcelona as he left Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira on the bench in a side that included seven changes from last weekend's 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.

"The important thing is to win and now think about Tuesday. We have great desire and hope for the games coming up, we know that in a week we will be playing for the Cup and the Champions League."

Angel Di Maria's free-kick that Daniel Aranzubia turned wide was the only real action of an uneventful first quarter, but Deportivo then started to take control with Riki and Pizzi a constant menace to the Madrid defence.

Pizzi went close twice in two minutes as he volleyed over and then bent a wonderful effort inches past Lopez's left-hand post.

Moments later though his strike partner did open the scoring as he was played in Pizzi on the left side of the box and fired a rasping effort towards goal that Lopez, despite the power on the shot, will have been disappointed to see go in at his near post.

Pizzi was then desperately unlucky not to make it 2-0 as he jinked past Pepe and Alvaro Arbeloa before dinking a shot over Lopez which was cleared off the line by Marcelo.

Riki should also have doubled his tally when he fired wide when clean through on Lopez and the Madrid keeper was then forced into a fine save from Bruno Gama's rising drive.

However, for all their dominance Deportivo nearly surrendered their lead seconds before half-time as Aranzubia had to race off his line to prevent Jose Maria Callejon levelling in the last action of the half.

The visitors reacted after the break and after they had two penalty claims for handball turned down, Mourinho sent on Ronaldo, Khedira and Ozil in place of Marcelo, Luka Modric and Michael Essien.

Even with their stars on the field though the champions still weren't creating a huge amount until a moment of brilliance from Kaka brought them level.

Ronaldo then twice came agonisingly close with 12 minutes to go as Aranzubia somehow got a toe to his goalbound effort from a narrow angle before he glanced a header just wide of the far post.

However, the Portuguese did have a hand in the winner when it arrived two minutes from time as he was found by a wonderful pass from Kaka and squared for Higuain to apply the simplest of finishes.

The action didn't end there though as Di Maria was sent-off in stoppage time as he was shown two yellow cards in barely 20 seconds for failing to allow Deportivo to take a free-kick.

Liverpool Hamilton Academical game supposedly amongst 680 possible fit fixes

Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet have turn out with a claim today, only hours after Europol said more than 680 activities have been fixed worldwide. A Champions League game was revolved around the fact by much of the press speculation in the UK based in Ekstra Bladet appear certain that it was Liverpoolas 1-0 win over Debrecen in '09 and England, over the last three to four years, was one of many fixed matches. They suggest that Debrecen goalkeeper Vukasin Poleksic was bribed to make certain that there were over 2.5 goals in the fit. Nevertheless, Liverpool had an undesirable night facing goal and Poleksic just conceded one, where he hit out a go from Fernando Torres into the way of Dirk Kuyt to declare the success. In text messages recovered by police a' individuals behind the match fixing bemoaned the actual fact Steven Gerrard missed some respectable odds against Debrecen. Iker getting better from injury dreams with a title this year

Iker Casillas says his recovery from a broken bone in his hand is certainly going a lot better than expected and he might be back between the Real Madrid posts when late March.

Casillas' hand was broken by a random end from his team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa all through Madrid's Copa del Rey quarter-final sport at the Mestalla on January 23.

It was feared he would face 3 months on the sidelines, and the club moved quickly to signal Diego Lopez for 3.5 million from Sevilla to play in their likely season-defining games against Barcelona in the Copa and Manchester United in the Champions League.

The Madrid club leader told reporters on Thursday night, at the opening of a new club store at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, that the first timeframe had only been a worst-case scenario.

"I am feeling really positive," Casillas said. "The surgeon gave me the worst-case scenario, he said it may take 90 days. But yesterday when the splint was removed, I was told I'd four weeks left. Now I'm doing active exercises to obtain mobility and strength back in the finger."

Casillas said he had been spending so much time at Madrid's Valdebebas training center to obtain back playing as soon as possible.

"Until now I have not had much power in it, but I'm getting it back little by little," he explained. "We are at the halfway point of the injury. I've still got per month to go. I will need to work more and suffer more to get back the freedom of before. I am getting excited about returning. It is worse being off the message than on it."

The big event was also joined by Casillas' team-mates including Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria, Jose Callejon, Nacho and Kaka, although coach Jose Mourinho was missing.

Alonso told reporters that he did not know yet whether he would get over his groin problem over time for next Tuesday's Copa semi-final second leg at Barcelona's Camp Nou.

"I am in the restoration stage," the midfielder said. "I am hoping to get better when possible, to get gone the discomfort and return in top form. When I will get ready plenty of people ask. I aspire to be able to play against Barca, but I don't have a remedy right now."

Former Liverpool person Alonso stated that, with the tie balanced at 1-1, whoever obtained first in the Champions League last 16 return game at Manchester United on March 5 would be favourites to succeed.

"They can have the help of their fans," he explained. "It will be a challenge. The side that results first is likely to be favourites. Old Trafford is a good ground and it's the kind of match most of us like to play. The tie is extremely open."

Di Maria said that it could fit Madrid to be playing overseas in both of the future, potentially season-defining, activities.

"Things are getting well and we hope to carry on this way," he said. "We know that we have to have huge matches in both contests and that it'll maybe not be easy. Perhaps playing away is going to be inside our favour because we prosper when things are against us. We have had this week to work with the best way to approach the games. I hope everything goes well."

Benzema, who remains any doubt for Saturday evening's La Liga game at Deportivo La Coruna, said he wasn't worried about his recent bad form in front of goal.

"I trust that I score more goals than I've up to now, nevertheless the thing is the team and to win the future matches," he said. "We have to come together to win. We've a fantastic team and we're all in good form."

Until the Blaugrana surrounded out Sevilla afterwards Saturday evening, the gain moved Real to within 13 factors of league leaders Barcelona. Inspite of the profit remaining the same, Kaka thinks success over Depor may increase Real's likelihood of claiming carpet this term.

Swansea City Preparing For Life Without Manchester City Target ...

Swansea City are already searching for possible replacements for manager Michael Laudrup amigst speculation that he is wanted by both Real Madrid and Manchester City.

The Dane, who arrived having last coached Mallorca, signed a two-year contract when replacing Liverpool-bound Brendan Rodgers at the start of the current season and has opened discussions over extending his stay at the Liberty Stadium following an impressive first year.

But his success has alerted both Manchester City and Real Madrid, who could both be looking for new managers in the summer with doubts surrounding the futures of both Roberto Mancini and Jose Mourinho.

And, as a result, Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has already began to scour Europe for potential replacements should Laudrup leave in the summer with the club potentially looking for their third manager in as many seasons.

"I think we have to be aware of different managers and what they stand for," Jenkins told the Daily Telegraph. "We're probably aware of certain managers who could come here in the future. It's an ongoing process. Whether it happens in a year, two years or five years, we have to be ready.

"There are bigger clubs than us having that problem. When Man United lose [Cristiano] Ronaldo or Arsenal lose [Robin] van Persie, for us to question whether we'll lose people would be a little unlikely. We just need to be ready."

Laudrup has been a huge success at Swansea City, leading the club to a first-ever domestic cup final in their history and building on the platform put in place by Rodgers during his spell in charge at the Liberty Stadium.

Laudrup will lead his side out at Wembley on Sunday when they face League Two Bradford City in the final of the Capital One Cup.

Manchester United Scout South American Defender Ahead of ...

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Ecuadorian international defender Frickson Erazo and could make a move in the summer.

fanatix tickets- Sunderland vs Manchester United tickets are on sale from £27 for the match on March 30th at the Stadium of Light.

Not much is known about the 24-year-old centre-back, who plies his trade for Barcelona SC in his homeland, but he has been watched by scouts from both Old Trafford and Real Madrid to track his progress.

Capped 21 times by his country, where he is a team-mate to United's Antonio Valencia, he will come relatively cheaply in terms of the present transfer market and would provide experienced cover with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic struggling with injuries at times.

Johnny Evans has made a place at the heart of defence his own this season, while Chris Smalling also offers another alternative. But it appears manager Sir Alex Ferguson has decided that Phil Jones will be utilised in midfield more than in his more natural defensive role.

Erazo told the Daily Mail: 'It's true that there was initial contact, but it will not help if my performance drops. I try not to think about this. It's really flattering that big European clubs are watching football in my country, but if you think about playing with Real Madrid or Manchester United you risk losing concentration."

Despite being 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League, United have struggled with leaking goals at times this season and Ferguson could be targeting some defensive reinforcements in the summer with a replacement for Patrice Evra at left-back a priority.

Europa League Betting: Zenit to withstand Anfield onslaught ... - Betfair

"In the group stage Liverpool lost at home to Udinese and could only draw with Young Boys of Berne, and in the qualifiers only a late Luis Suarez strike saved them from an embarrassing defeat to Hearts."

Liverpool need one of their famous European comebacks to reach the last 16 of the Europa League, but Kevin Hatchard isn't convinced they can overcome Zenit St Petersburg. He does however think Chelsea will march on.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has made several public pronouncements of faith when it comes to turning this tie around, but make no mistake, last week's 2-0 defeat in Russia has left the Merseysiders' Europa League hopes hanging by a gossamer-thin thread. Liverpool's failure to score an away goal, despite the creation of several superb opportunities, could prove crucial.

Some observers have suggested Liverpool can take confidence from Sunday's 5-0 demolition of Swansea City at Anfield, but I think the relevance of that result can be questioned. The Swans made seven changes to their team ahead of Sunday's Capital One Cup final, and the fringe players put in a truly atrocious display. It's also worth considering that two of Liverpool's goalscorers on Sunday, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge, are ineligible for Thursday's match.

Liverpool tend to be flat-track bullies at Anfield these days, and their home results against top-end Premier League sides are far from impressive. Manchester United and Arsenal both left Merseyside with maximum points, while Manchester City came from behind to snatch a draw. In the Europa League group stage Liverpool lost at home to Udinese and could only draw with Young Boys of Berne, and in the qualifiers only a late Luis Suarez strike saved them from an embarrassing defeat to Hearts.

A further concern is that Zenit are a dangerous outfit on their travels, with seven wins in their last nine away games. Luciano Spalletti's men have the best away record in the Russian Premier League, with six wins and two draws, and in the Champions League group stage they won 1-0 at AC Milan. Defeats at Malaga (3-0) and Anderlecht (1-0) show Zenit aren't infallible on their travels in Europe, but this time around Zenit have something to defend.

Liverpool need one of their famed Anfield displays, with stars like Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard on top form, but the lack of an away goal in the first leg puts them in a tricky position. If Zenit score a goal at Anfield, Liverpool will need four goals to progress, and it's worth considering that Rodgers' side have kept just two Europa League clean sheets since the group stage began.

Liverpool look too short to me at 1.684/6, and you could oppose them in a number of ways. You could just lay them, or back Zenit +0.5 & +1.0 on the Asian Handicap at 2.09n/a or back Zenit Draw No Bet at 2.789/5. I don't think Liverpool will keep a clean sheet, so back Both Teams to Score at 1.834/5.

The first leg of this tie was played with the intensity of a testimonial for a player that no-one ever really liked. It was a mind-numbingly turgid affair played in front of a crowd that sounded like they were sat 300 miles away. Oscar's late goal gave Chelsea an undeserved 1-0 victory which has surely killed off the tie.

Sparta have missed their chance to cause an upset, and the Opta stats make hideous reading for fans of the Czech club. Sparta haven't won any of their last ten away games in all competitions, while Chelsea have won eight of their last nine European games at Stamford Bridge. To make matters worse for Sparta, Chelsea have banged in 28 goals in their last nine European home games.

Chelsea will rest Frank Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic, but I still can't see anything but a convincing home win. I didn't see much in the first leg to suggest that Sparta can threaten the Chelsea rearguard, so it's worth a look at backing Chelsea to Win to Nil at 2.111/10. I am gobsmacked that you can back Chelsea -1.5 on the Asian Handicap at 2.01/1, so take advantage.
