Brittney Griner: Insufficient Position Might Hold Baylor Star at End of Seat in Basketball

Mark Cuban, you sir, are crazy. Or simply desperate for attention. However, if the latter was indeed your wish, ponder over it granted. Early in the day this week, the Dallas Mavericks owner caused a serious stir when he said he'd be ready to draft Baylor Lady Bears star Brittney Griner in the second round of the NBA draft (via ESPN's Tim MacMahon ): Cuban said he would consider selecting Griner, a three-time All-American and Big 12 player of the year, in the 2nd round of the NBA draft. If the Mavs do not draft her, Cuban said he'd have "no problem whatsoever" inviting Griner to try out for an area on Dallas' summer league team. 'If she is the best on the board, I'll just take her,' Cuban said before the Mavs' Tuesday evening game against theALos Angeles Lakers. 'I have seriously considered it. I have thought about it already. Would I actually do it? Today, I had slim toward yes, simply to see if she can perform it. You never know until you give somebody a chance, and it is not like the probability of any late-50s write pick includes a good chance of making it.' Oy.AFor now, let's maybe not concentrate on the confusing prejudice of that strategya'ask the Sacramento Kings (Isaiah Thomas) should they think late second-round choices are worthlessa'but simply on Griner's potential role in the NBA. And it's simple. She'd not need one. This is simply not designed to be a low priced shot at the former Baylor star. During her career with the Bears, she changed the phrase "unstoppable," calculating 5.1 blocks, 8.7 boards and 22.1 items in four years. She ruined countless documents and established herself as the most dominant player in women's hoops history. The simple proven fact that this is a good conversation is aAtestamentAto what she has supposed to this sport. But where in the NBA is she going to play? In college, she was an power in the post since 6'8" is enormous in the women's game. John Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports In the NBA, she's nothing more than a tweener. That's not to say small power forwards haven't had success in the NBA before, but it is generally because they mix deficiencies in height with both daunting power, wonderful athleticism or the expertise to perform the wing. Griner (208 pounds) does not have the size or strength to take on NBA big guys down low. She doesn't have the rate, athleticism or firing capability to play effortlessly on the border. With her raw expertise, I have no doubt that she could continue with the boys in a pick-up game. But in an organized NBA game, she'd just be described as a mismatch for another staff, wherever she plays. The record-breaking superstar is really a lock for the No. 1 select in the WNBA draft, but she shouldn't get everywhere in the top 60 in the NBA draft.
