Well, you had to figure it absolutely was likely to happen sooner in place of later: Andy Enfield, clean off leading Florida Gulf Coast to the finest NCAA Tournament run a seed ever had, could get job offers at much bigger (and better-paying) programs. And unsurprisingly, he got on a single a' heas the newest head coach at USC. While I congratulate Enfield on all his success and the newest job he parlayed that success into, this is also somewhat of your own issue for me personally. Why? I was one of many individuals Enfield beat out for the task. Devoted SportsGrid readers may remember this article from January, when I declared my candidacy for the task I fundamentally did not get. While I felt good about my chances at the time, I canat say Iam stunned that Enfield finally beat me, and all the candidates, out. And now, with the procedure over, I believe itas only appropriate to judge USCas decision. So, without more ado: a tale of the tape between USC teaching candidates: Andy Enfield and Glenn Davis. Experience: Well, I've to admit a Enfeld has me beat in this category. He only got a tiny college to the Sweet 16 a Iave never done that. Any school never was never taken by iave to the Sweet 16. Actually, Iave never coached a basketball team. Furthermore, Enfieldas served as an assistant at Florida State and in the NBA. While sometimes a relative newcomer works on a big stage and the success is at least partly caused by how theyare perhaps not feeling the pressure simply because they havenat been there before and donat know very well what itas want to fail in big occasions a' both of which certainly apply to me a' I understand that Enfieldas experience in training a successful group is a positive. Advantage: Enfield. This down from both a candidate and USC perspective is broken by outside-the-box thinking: Letas. As an outsider in the training world, I'd have always brought an outside-the-box method of the table. While Enfield doesnat have much experience in the head coaching ranks (2 yrs), heas held it's place in basketball long enough to inevitably get some coaching exhibitions along the way. As for USC thinking outside the box: Enfield isnat always an all natural candidate for them. He doesnat have roots on the west coast a' his teaching experience in school game is all in Florida. This may cause a Florida-to-USC probability direction that could not have existed otherwise. And again, while Enfield may be the hot training name of the moment a' that will be as in-the-box as splashy new hires get a' heas also just been a head coach for just two decades, and at a small college. A little dangerous for a name school like USC. Still, it doesnat have more outside the box than the usual person whoas never taught before. Imagine how clean my perception would be. Advantage: me. Playing style: Within my USC cover letter, I promised aaggressive, targeting basketball at both ends of the floor.a Enfield produced a statement upon taking the USC career that stated his plans to deploy aan interesting, up-tempo type of playa a' reasonable to anticipate, given how FGCU played. Therefore weare on a single site there. Advantage: wash. Candidacy promotional video: I made this: In terms of I know, Enfield didnat create a movie. Advantage: me. Miscellaneous non-basketball hype: My youth (Iam 25) and lack of old-fashioned knowledge would truly get USC much interest, but I acknowledge not totally all of it'd stay positive. Enfieldas choosing, on another hand, will undoubtedly produce an entire new round of protection of his ex-model wife. Probably, no body may have something negative to say about this. Minor edge: Enfield. Overall: While I'll of course always be a staunch defender of my candidacy, I will grudgingly see why USC went in an alternative way. Enfield was on pretty much no oneas radar before the NCAAs, but that doesnat mean he only gained the show with a couple of impressive annoyed wins a' Enfieldas career has been building to a minute similar to this for decades now. His success isnat guaranteed, but success as USCas hockey coach isnat guaranteed, time a' while itas undoubtedly possible to gain there, having to take on one of Americaas many storied plans right across town complicates matters a great deal. If his USC teams can be got by Enfield like this year;s FGCU group did to play, heall win plenty of games there. Much as it pains me to express it, Iam unsure USC could have done better a even had they used me. Still, notice to Pat Haden: I really hope youall be keeping my name on record. SI image, via
