Dan Ashworth today left West Brom ahead of schedule after the Baggies agreed to let him join the Football Association on Monday.
Ashworth ended his nine-year stint at The Hawthorns four months early, although he will continue to work for the club one day a week as a consultant until the summer.
The 41-year-old will start work as the FA's director of elite development next week after spending four and a half years as Baggies sporting and technical director.
Ashworth, who joined Albion as an academy coach in 2004, had been due to leave in the summer after serving a 12-month notice period but has already completed the handover to successor Richard Garlick.
Chairman Jeremy Peace said: "Dan has worked tirelessly for this football club for the past nine years and leaves with our best wishes.
"He has remained fully committed to his club responsibilities since it was announced last September he would be leaving, for which I would like to thank him. The handover with Richard has gone extremely well, which has enabled us to agree to an early departure date with the FA for Dan, and we now look forward to Richard building on the solid foundations laid by Dan."
Ashworth's appointment was announced by the FA in September and he will take up the role at St George's Park that was vacated by Gareth Southgate.
But he hit the headlines most for successfully recruiting bargain signings including Youssouf Mulumbu, Peter Odemwingie and Claudio Yacob.
"I have had nine fantastic years here and I just want to say a big thank to everyone connected with the football club – the staff, players and supporters," said Ashworth.
"With the January transfer window now closed, the team having already amassed 40 points and Richard very much hands on in his new role, we all agreed that this would be an appropriate time for me to move on."
